Students will make an op./ed about the effects of racism on contemporary society.
What are the planning steps?
Students should have read a piece of literature that reveals either subtly or blatantly the effects of closed-mindedness in relation to race and ethnicity. Students can create a KWL chart to help document observations and learned statistics and data. Students should research the effects of racism on early and modern society.
What are the production steps?
-Sample op./ed/ from The New York Times.
-Create brainstorming
-Outline
-Create editorial based on reading and research
What are the revision steps?
-How can the editorial be more convincing?
-How can this help someone to be persuaded?
-Peer editing
-What would make this marketable?
Students could analyze models or examples from media like:
1.) New York Times op./eds.
2.) Transcripts of video documentaries
3.) Public trial viewings regarding hate crimes
They would need to learn how to:
-Use professional, yet direct language
-"Persuade"
-Be convincing, but not redundant
I would need to learn how to:
-Differentiate the journalistic nature of this project for students who have low comprehension and writing proficiencies.
Who do I know that can already do some or all of these things?
